Using The Divi Theme Builder

Website Design

Divi 4.0 has finally dropped and I’ve been kicking the tires of the new theme builder. I was expecting complexity but I’m delighted to say that it’s really intuitive for all levels of user.

If you’re not a complete nerd like me, you might be wondering what all of the fuss is about. It’s no secret that key areas of Divi, like the menu/header and footer, really needed some attention, along with blog post and archive layouts.

The Divi Theme Builder delivers all of that and more. It brings complete design freedom, because you can now use the Divi builder to create global templates for all of those areas, when previously you had to use plugins, wrangle widgets or create quite a lot of CSS.

TEMPLATES YOU CAN CREATE WITH THE DIVI THEME BUILDER

  • Header & menu area
  • Footer area
  • Single blog post
  • Blog category archive
  • WooCommerce product
  • WooCommerce archive
  • WooCommerce Shop, Cart & Checkout pages
  • 404 page
  • Search results template

That’s by no means an exhaustive list. ANY custom post type now has templating options. And the combinations are infinite. For example, you can create a header to be used only or certain pages. Perfect for impactful home pages or sales pages.

Or you could create different layouts for each blog category, which is something I’ve often wanted to do in the past.

Sadly it means saying goodbye to trusty plugins which have served us well like the CPT Layout Injector, Taxonomy Layout Injector and the Woo Layout Injector (check out the third video to see how to convert your existing layouts).

Before we dive in, if you haven’t updated to Divi 4.0 yet, make sure you’re all backed up in case you need to rollback to a previous version. Onto the videos…

Using the Divi Theme Builder

You’ll find the Theme Builder area in the Divi menu.

In this video, you can watch as I create a simple footer from scratch and activate it to replace the default footer area which previously used widgets.

Building A Blog Post Template

In this video, I’ll show you how to create a blog post template, but you can follow this process to create a template for any kind of post or product.

Converting Injector Plugin Layouts

And finally, if you’ve been using any of the injector layout plugins, like the CPT Layout Injector, then you’ll be happy to know that you can reuse those layouts in the new Theme Builder area and simply swap a couple of modules over. It’s very straightforward.

The Divi 4.0 Theme Builder is truly the game-changing upgrade we’ve been waiting for. If you’ve got any questions or need any help, head over to our lovely and friendly Facebook group, The Design Space Lounge.
